“The Prince of Music”: Palestrina at 500

Join us to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Palestrina, Europe’s most important composer of the high Renaissance.
In the first half of tonight’s programme, sumptuous motets and madrigals interweave movements from the composer’s famous Missa Papae Marcelli, the mass setting that – according to legend – saved sacred music and earned Palestrina the title of Princeps musicae: the Prince of Music.

In the second half, experience the fascinating variety of musical styles in use in Rome at the turn of the 17th century, where timeless Gregorian chant, Palestrina’s beautiful Renaissance polyphony, and an exquisite emerging new art-form – the Baroque aria – complement each other perfectly to breath-taking effect.

Proceeds from this performance go to support Alabaré, a Salisbury-based charity founded in 1991 that supports vulnerable, homeless and marginalised people as they transform their lives, providing accommodation and helping each person gain the skills, confidence and opportunities they need in order to live a fulfilled life. Alabaré has specific homes for those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, young people over 16, veterans and adults with learning disabilities. In 2023 the charity supported over 2,100 people through its homes and services across England and Wales.
