“Praises, Tears, and Cries”: the sound-world of Orlando Gibbons
The Sarum Consort and The Rose Consort of Viols join forces for this fascinating programme exploring the Jacobean sound-world of Orlando Gibbons and his contemporaries. Gibbons, who died 400 years ago this year, led a generation of English composers who explored sounds and textures in music in new ways. From the expansive to the intimate, the energetic to the elegant, this music captivates, surprises, and delights.
With verse anthems, madrigals, and instrumental music by Gibbons, Weelkes, Tomkins, and Wilbye, including Gibbons’ vocal fantasia “The Cries of London”.
Described as "the jewel in the crown of Salisbury music", The Sarum Consort is a professional choral ensemble that has been presenting innovative and compelling programmes ever since its debut in 1992. It has a reputation as one of the UK's leading early music ensembles, receiving critical acclaim for both recordings and concert performances.
"... The Sarum Consort sings everything with poised intensity and does this lovely music every possible justice" - BBC Music Magazine
